Casey Martin

Casey won 17 junior golf titles in his home state of Oregon. He also earned a scholarship to Stanford University, where he and his teammates Tiger Woods and Notay Begay won the 1994 NCAA golf championship. After graduating from Stanford with a degree in economics, Casey pursued his dream of playing golf professionally. However, he soon encountered a huge barrier. In the types of tournaments that Casey wanted to play, the PGA Tour would not allow him to use a cart, saying it would give him an unfair advantage over his opponents. Martin had Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome, a rare degenerative circulatory disorder. Martin is eight years removed from his victory at the 1998 Nike Lakeland Classic and his legal triumph over the PGA Tour in federal court, six years from his only top-20 finish on the PGA Tour, five years from the U.S. Supreme Court decision that upheld his right to ride, four years from nearly dying from an infection after an aggressive treatment went awry and three years from his last full season on the Nationwide Tour. The last couple of seasons have consisted of sparse success and scant headlines, most of the latter coming late in 2005 after he failed at Q school and announced that pro golf would be in his rearview mirror soon.

The bottom line is he was good enough to play collegiately with his disability but the PGA is a whole different story. Even with preferential treatment given to him by the courts, he could not win enough to keep his PGA card. After failng Qualifying school again, he will likely retire and is looking at a college coaching job. Spirit and desire are great but in the end, he proved what we already knew. You have to be in top physical shape to compete in any sport at the highest level, he only finished in the top 20 once on the PGA tour. He made for a great story for a few years and seemed to be the nicest guy but none of that makes you a great PGA golfer.
